Martha's Vineyard Trivia

What are "Up-Island" and "Down-Island":

Up-Island is West Tisbury, Chilmark, Mememsha, and Aquinnah (Gay Head). They are more remote and are all "dry" towns with no liquor stores, the restaurants don't sell alcohol (but you can bring your own), and there are no ATMs. All stores close by 6:30/7pm.

Down Island is Vineyard Haven (Tisbury), Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. They are the most populous towns with the most traffic, shops, bars and restaurants. The only pharmacies/drug stores are in Vineyard Haven and Edgartown. The Ferry goes in to Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven. Vineyard Haven is a dry town, but Oak Bluffs and Edgartown are not.

CASH Bring cash when you are Up-Island, there are no ATMs and many places do not take credit cards. (Down-Island, there are plenty of ATMs and credit cards are widely accepted).

WEATHER June tends to be one of the loveliest months on the Vineyard. It is typically warm and swimable during the day, cooling off at night. There is always the possibility of a cool or rainy spell, so plan accordingly (cozy clothes, rainwear, etc.)

SHOES Be mindful that the wedding ceremony and reception will be held outside in a grassy area. Choose your shoes knowing that the ground may become wet and soft in places. If it does rain, a tent will cover the ceremony and reception.

BEVERAGES The only towns on the island that serve and sell alcohol are Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. You can bring your own wine and cocktails to restaurants up-island, but you cannot buy alcohol up-island. If you want, you can bring some from home or buy it in Oak Bluffs or Edgartown.

MEDICAL/FOOD NEEDS The only drug stores and pharmacies are in Edgartown and Vineyard Haven. There are no restaurants that deliver on island. Most stores up-island close by 6:30/7pm. Stores in Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown stay open later.
